Registration and Orientation Information
for Online Credit Courses
If you want to take a Durham Tech online credit course, please read all
of the information on this web page carefully!
| Step
1 |
Make sure you
have the computer access necessary to take an online course.
You need regular, frequent, dependable access to a computer with the
following:
- Internet access (usually through a modem and Internet Service Provider)
- Internet Explorer 6 (or higher) or Firefox 2 (or higher)
- A working e-mail address
Some classes may have additional software requirements. These requirements will be listed on the
permission request form (see step 2)
Make sure you understand how online courses work and that
you have the skills to succeed in an online learning environment (see
About online learning).
|
| Step
2 |
Obtain permission to register by completing the Online Permission Request form.
Before you register, you must obtain permission from the instructor of the course (or designee, such as program director).
Note: Before you request permission, please go to the web page
About Online Learning and read it carefully.
Summer 2008 Online Course Permission Request
Form
After completing the form, you will receive an email message from the instructor.
If approved to register, the message will provide the Course Identification Number (CIN)
for telephone registration or a printable "Permission to Register" message for on-campus
registration. The email will also provide orientation requirements for the course.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Obtaining permission to register does NOT guarantee you a
space in the course. All online courses have a limited number of spaces,
and registration is on a first-come, first served basis.
- If you register for the online course and you have
not obtained
the "Permission to Register" document, the instructor may drop you from the course.
|
| Step 3 |
See an advisor, register for, and pay for
the course.
While you are waiting to receive the instructor's permission, you can
begin planning to see an advisor. For detailed information see the
Advising
web site or contact the Advising Center at (919) 686-3348.
After you receive the instructor's permission, you are ready to register.
For details, see the Registration Web page or contact
Durham Tech's
Registration office at (919) 686-3378 / 3379.
|
| Step
4 |
You
MUST complete the orientation for your course in order to gain access to
course materials and class discussion forums.
Orientation is handled differently for different courses. You will receive detailed
instructions about orientation when you receive permission to register.
If you are taking more than one online course, you should plan to attend
the orientations for ALL of your courses.
NOTE: If you cannot attend the scheduled orientation for your
course, contact the instructor before classes begin to see if a make-up orientation can be
arranged.
|
| Step
5 |
Obtain course materials from the Durham Tech bookstore.
The bookstore is located in the Wynn Center
on main campus.
Bookstore telephone number is (919) 686-3642.

| Step
6 |

course, during orientation.
