Registration and Orientation Information for Online Credit Courses

If you want to take a Durham Tech online credit course, please read all of the information on this web page carefully!

Follow these steps to register for an online credit course.
Step 1 Make sure you have the computer access and skills necessary to take an online course.
Step 2 Obtain permission to register by completing the Online Permission Request form.
Step 3 See an advisor, register and pay for the course.
Step 4 Attend the orientation for your course (or, for some courses, complete the online orientation).
Step 5 Obtain course materials from the bookstore.
Step 6 Go to class on the Internet beginning on the date specified by your instructor.

Step 1 Make sure you have the computer access necessary to take an online course.
You need regular, frequent, dependable access to a computer with the following:
  • Internet access (usually through a modem and Internet Service Provider)
  • Internet Explorer 6 (or higher) or Firefox 2 (or higher)
  • A working e-mail address

Some classes may have additional software requirements. These requirements will be listed on the permission request form (see step 2)

Make sure you understand how online courses work and that you have the skills to succeed in an online learning environment (see About online learning).

Step 2

Obtain permission to register by completing the Online Permission Request form.
Before you register, you must obtain permission from the instructor of the course (or designee, such as program director).
Note: Before you request permission, please go to the web page About Online Learning and read it carefully.

Summer 2008 Online Course Permission Request Form

After completing the form, you will receive an email message from the instructor. If approved to register, the message will provide the Course Identification Number (CIN) for telephone registration or a printable "Permission to Register" message for on-campus registration. The email will also provide orientation requirements for the course.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Obtaining permission to register does NOT guarantee you a space in the course. All online courses have a limited number of spaces, and registration is on a first-come, first served basis.

  • If you register for the online course and you have not obtained the "Permission to Register" document, the instructor may drop you from the course.

Step 3 See an advisor, register for, and pay for the course.

While you are waiting to receive the instructor's permission, you can begin planning to see an advisor. For detailed information see the Advising web site or contact the Advising Center at (919) 686-3348.

After you receive the instructor's permission, you are ready to register. For details, see the Registration Web page or contact Durham Tech's Registration office at (919) 686-3378 / 3379.

Step 4 You MUST complete the orientation for your course in order to gain access to course materials and class discussion forums.

Orientation is handled differently for different courses. You will receive detailed instructions about orientation when you receive permission to register.

If you are taking more than one online course, you should plan to attend the orientations for ALL of your courses.

NOTE: If you cannot attend the scheduled orientation for your course, contact the instructor before classes begin to see if a make-up orientation can be arranged.

Step 5 Obtain course materials from the Durham Tech bookstore.

The bookstore is located in the Wynn Center on main campus.
Bookstore telephone number is (919) 686-3642.

Step 6

"Go to class" on the Internet on the date indicated by your instructor.

Many online classes use a system called Blackboard.... here is a link to enter Blackboard. You will receive details on your username and password, or other instructions for your course, during orientation.

If you have specific questions about a particular online course, please contact the instructor or program director.

For general questions about online courses at Durham Tech, contact Karen McPhaul at mcphaulk@durhamtech.edu or (919) 686-3585.
